Greek wedding requirements

By Greek Law for a Civil Wedding the couple must have permission from the President of the community. To obtain the permission which we will obtain for you you will need to provide us with the following documents.


1 Original birth certificate for both bride and groom.


2 Certificate of Non - Impediment or a freedom to marry certificate for both bride and groom these must be obtained from your local registry office, but not earlier than 3 months before the wedding date as they would not be acceptable by the Greek authorities


3 If you have been recently divorced, a copy of the divorce certificate is also needed. Please ask us for more details.

 

NOTES ON NECESSARY DOCUMENTS FOR GREEK WEDDINGS
A If you are married already and are just Renewing your Vows, No paperwork is needed.
B If you intent to have a religious Greek Orthodox or Catholic wedding, please have a look at our religious weddings page for the extra document requirements
Religious weddings - extra requirements
The above documents need to be forwarded to your local Greek Consulate General in order to be officially translated in Greek allow up to 21 days before the documents are ready for collection Copies of the original birth certificates, copies of the certificates of Non Impediment and their original official Greek translations have to be received, in Santorini at least 20 days prior to the wedding. You must however remember to bring all Original documents English and Greek translations with you to Greece.
Also at least two other people must be present as witnesses in order to declare to the community that the wedding has taken place. Local Santorini island wedding coordinator deals with the handling of the paperwork in Greece, as well as the provision of the witnesses in Santorini.
