DIMITRA POROS GREECE - Location and General Information |

port of Athens, Piraeus. The beautiful capital and port of Poros

| Poros,
which translated means passage, is one of the most picturesesque
islands of the Saronic Gulf in Greece. The Island lies about
40 Kilometers south of Athens and is a stones throw away from
Peloponnese. The locals think of it as Little Venice
and you can understand why with the narrow sea canal separating
Poros island from the mainland Peloponnese, its traditional
houses, the clock tower, the narrow and winding streets, the
cafes and restaurants along the quay. Poros used to be spilt
into two islands: Kalavria and Spheria. Today the two islands
are connected by a small bridge. Kalavria, the more peaceful
of the two islands that make up Poros with crystal water and
green vegetation. Spheria, where Poros Town is situated, is
the smaller of the two islands and this is where you will find
the center of nightlife on Poros as well as the many cafes and
restaurants. On Poros island the visitor
can enjoy water skiing, wind surfing, jet skiing, para sailing
and may other
water sport activities. |

GETTING TO HOTEL DIMITRA AND POROS ISLAND

There
is an express bus line that departs from Eleftherios Venizelos
Athens International Airport, to Piraeus port every 20 minutes,
the journey takes around 1 hour and a half. Alternatively, after
leaving the Athens airport terminal building you can find many
yellow cabs to take you to the harbour of Piraeus. |
| From
Piraeus port, Nova Ferries and Hellenic Seaways ferry companies
have regular daily schedules to Poros. By car ferry it takes
approximately 2 1/2 hours to get from Piraeus to Poros with
an approximate ticket cost of Euro 6,00. EuroSeas and Hellenic
Seaways ferry companies also offer Flying Dolphin hydrofoils
or Catamaran ferries with which you can travel to Poros in just
1 hour at the approximate rate of Euro 16,00 per person. Another
alternative is to travel by bus or minibus from the airport
to Galatas town of Peloponnese. Galatas is just a few hundred
meters away from Poros island and there are 24 hour small taxi
boats between Galatas and Poros. The distance from Athens airport
to Galatas is approximately 180 kilometers, passing over the
Corinth Canal. |

SUGGESTED POROS EXCURSIONS

If
you are interested in a trip around Poros Island, you should not
miss a visit to the Monastery, which was built in 1726 of materials
from the temple of Apollo. You can also see the ruins of the Temple
of Poseidon which is not far from the Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi,a
place also worth visiting. Should you be interested in a trip
to Galatas town, located only 5 minutes away from the harbour
of Poros and across to the Peloponnese, you can get there by small
boat taxi which frequently departs from Poros port. |
Galatas
town, like Poros has many cafes, restaurants and shops along the
quay where you can have a rest and watch the life go by. If you
like to go further into the mainland you can hire a car for the
day to see Trizina , the Palace of Theseus, the forest of Lemonodassos
with its 30.000 lemon trees. Ten Kilometres from Galatas there
is the beautiful village of Trizina where there one can find the
ruins of Ancient Trizina as well as the Illikos river springs,
in a green fall of plane trees forge Diavologefiro / devil bridge
where Theseus had founded the Nymphia Aphrodite sacred place.
One can also visit Epidavros with the 4th century BC ancient amphitheater.
Thendrive on to Mycenae where you can see the Lions Gate, the
Palace of Agamemnon, the grave of circle, the tombs and finally
Nafplion the first Capital city of Greece. It is possible also
to drive on to the Corinth Canal. You can enjoy a spectacular
view from the bridge. The Corinth Canal joins the Peloponnese
with the mainland of Greece. Another option is to cruise to Hydra
and Spetses island.
Cruise from Poros to Spetses to see a beautiful Island full of
character, then cruise off to Hydra. Do not forget a donkey ride
when you are in Hydra. Staying
