Astypalea
or Astypalea, being most westerly of the Dodecanese islands ,architecturally
is more akin to the Cyclades. Another one of those secret islands that
receives few foreign visitors but is popular with the Greeks. Whitewashed
houses,narrow maze-like streets,venetian castles,fortresses 14th
century churches, waterfalls,caves, fertile valleys, high cliffs,many
coves , sandy bays and the Greek hospitality all waiting to be discovered.
Astypalea, the most westerly
of the Dodecanese islands complex, stands in the center of the Aegean
sea. Its traditional architecture is mainly influenced by that of the
Cyclades. Most of the islands life is concentrated in Chora town, which
is the island's capital. One of the main attractions in Astypalaia island
is the old Venetian castle, built on a hill overlooking the island's port.
Other sights of Astypalea include the archaeological museum of Astypalea,
the traditional windmills and churches and the beautiful sandy and pebble
beaches. Astypalea island is an ideal location if you want to have a peaceful
vacation in a traditional Greek island that has been left untouched by
mass tourism.
Astypalea island is located between the Cycladic islands of Amorgos and
Anafi and the Dodecanese islands of Kos and Nisyros. You can fly to Astypalea
from Athens, the island is also connected by a ferry boat service with
the port of Athens, Piraeus, and on certain days of the week there are
ferry services to the island of Astypalea from the islands of Rhodes,
KOs, Naxos and Mykonos.
HOW TO GET TO ASTYPALEA ISLAND: You can fly to Astypalea from
Athens, but ferry boat connections to the island are also available on
certain days of the week from the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Naxos and Mykonos
as well as well as from the main Athens port, the port of Piraeus
